Crna Ovca, the popular festival that has been held in Baška on the island of Krk since 2006 as a unique blend of gastronomy, island heritage, culture, and sports, has received the “Croatian Island Product” label. This recognition, granted by the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds, celebrates initiatives that preserve tradition, strengthen island identity, and foster sustainable progress.
From the very beginning, Crna Ovca has consistently championed these values through its original concept and rich content – a fact that thousands of loyal visitors affirm year after year with their strong turnout.
“Being awarded the ‘Croatian Island Product’ label is a major acknowledgment for everyone who has helped shape Crna Ovca over nearly two decades – from Studio Conex, whose vision and flawless organization have defined the festival, to the many local associations, small producers, and individuals whose enthusiasm and dedication make this event so special every year. This recognition officially confirms what we on the island of Krk have long known – Crna Ovca brings together the best of island produce, cuisine, and heritage, and stands as a modern tourism experience beloved by visitors. My heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved, especially our longtime partners – the Baška Tourist Board and Valamar Riviera,” said Toni Juranić, Mayor of Baška, upon receiving the award.
Every third weekend in May, Crna Ovca draws local and international visitors with a thoughtfully curated program that creatively celebrates the richness of local heritage and tradition. At the heart of the festival is Baška’s lamb, prepared in many forms – from classic spit-roast or traditional stew (žgvacet) with šurlice pasta to modern culinary interpretations served in Baška’s restaurants. The festival shows how traditional flavors can be both preserved and reimagined for different tastes.
Beyond food, the festival is deeply dedicated to preserving cultural heritage and passing down traditional skills and crafts – from wool felting and Glagolitic script workshops to knot-tying and sailing traditions. A standout initiative is the ongoing work of the Sinjali association, which organizes the restoration of mrgari during the festival weekend – unique dry-stone sheepfolds that reflect the centuries-old harmony between people and nature on the island.
The entertainment program is also a vital part of the Crna Ovca experience, with open-air evening concerts becoming a festival hallmark. Over the years, the stage has hosted the biggest names in Croatian rock music, delivering electrifying performances and building a loyal fanbase. Many artists eagerly return, drawn by the festival’s one-of-a-kind energy and audience. In addition to music, Crna Ovca offers a full range of outdoor sports and activities, connecting with different generations and interests. This unique blend of food, culture, heritage, and entertainment makes Crna Ovca an unforgettable event that keeps people coming back.
The next edition of Crna Ovca will take place from May 16 to 18, 2025 in Baška. Join us and be part of a story that celebrates everything that makes Baška and the island of Krk truly special.
